The Bible
What is
the Bible? What place should it have in an individual’s life? How much
of it can actually be considered "God’s words" as opposed to the words
or opinions of men?
Opinions
of the Bible range from limited acceptance to outright rejection:
¨
Baha’i—The Bible is
one of many divine scriptures.
¨
Buddhism—The Bible
contains true and false teachings.
¨
Christian Science—The
Bible is an inferior revelation properly interpreted only by
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
¨
Hinduism—The Bible
is one of many world Scriptures; Vedic authority is supreme and
provides the proper worldview for biblical interpretation.
¨
Jehovah’s
Witnesses—The Bible is authoritative only when interpreted by
the Watchtower Society.
¨
Mormons—The Bible is
the Word of God as long as it is translated correctly. (When it
disagrees with Mormon theology it is considered incorrect due to
textual corruption, false translation or false interpretation.)
¨
Unification Church
(Moonies)—The Bible is one of God’s revelations, but has been
replaced by Moon’s superior revelations.
¨
Unitarian
Universalism—The Bible is a fallible recording of the evolution
of Israelite religion.
¨
Christianity—"The
Bible claims to be and proves to be the Word of God."
(Dr. Norman Geisler) "The Word of God, which is contained in the
Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, is the only rule to direct
us how we may glorify and enjoy him…. The Scriptures principally
teach what man is to believe concerning God, and what duty God
requires of man." (Westminster Shorter Catechism)
Let us
state our position up front: The facts of the Bible cannot be
explained by recourse to human theories concerning its origin, and the
biblical data itself leave inerrancy as the only option concerning its
contents. The God of Scripture has revealed Himself as a God of truth,
so errors in the autographs (the original writings) would prove that
God was not their author. Indeed, since no other religion offers
genuine evidence for belief in their God, apart from the Bible we are
forced to remain agnostic about God. He might exist, but beyond
general revelation we can know nothing about Him.
During the
Fall Bible School quarter we will present to you:
1. the
evidence that convinces us the Bible is God’s word to
us, and that it can be trusted and should be obeyed;
2. some
of the arguments that have been raised against the issues of
inspiration and inerrancy;
3.
examples of what happens when the Bible is not handled properly.
